    Description

    From the heart of the
    Pennsylvania Dutch farming communities
nestled among the rolling hills of
    Lancaster County Pennsylvania
    Offered for sale:
A lovely petite and dainty Japanese Pottery Teapot
that showcases the traditional craftsmanship of Japan.
Made of earthenware, it features a sharkskin glaze
with an intricate moriage hand-applied beaded foliage design.
It would be a wonderful addition to any collection
    of Asian antiques or teapots.
The following provenance on a handwritten
note was found inside the teapot:
    "A note from...
    Mrs Caroline Simonson
    This teapot was
    given to me by a
    3rd grade chum - back
    in 1937 approx. -
    her parents were Presbyt.
    missionaries in
    China who acquired
    it there! - some years
    earlier.
    C. Simonson"
Though acquired in China, the piece is not Chinese
and was probably made some years before
the missionary family referenced in the letter was in China.
I have included a photograph of the note
and will, of course, include it with the purchase
-- tucked inside the pot where I discovered it.
    Approximate measurements:
4 and 1/4 inches tall to the top of the lid's knob
    with the leaf basket inserted
3 and 1/2 inches tall without its lid and leaf basket
4 and 3/8 inch diameter at the center of the teapot
2 and 1/2 inch base diameter
6 and 1/4 inches across from the tip of the spout
to the outer edge of its handle
It is in good antique condition,
with no significant cracks or chips.
The spout of the teapot is a little rough to the touch,
    and my senior eyes
    had a hard time determining
    whether this
    roughness
    is caused by tiny chips
    or spots
on the earthenware that were missed
    when the white glaze was
    was added.
I have included photographs of these areas and
labeled them so you can judge for yourself.
Please review all the photographs carefully,
as they really are the best description,
to determine if this charming little teapot with its lid
    and leaf basket
meet the criteria to join your collection.
If you have questions, please send me a message
through eBay and I will reply as quickly as I can.
